Topographical challenges provided the inspiration for this front garden in Bethesda. To address major drainage problems posed by the site, we installed a dry streambed in front of the house, following the line of an existing swale. Connecting the streambed to a county culvert paralleling the side street, we filled the streambed area beds with mixed plantings designed to withstand both heavy rains and occasional drought, while providing seasonal interest.

In this award-winning landscape renovation, the owners had inherited a mature but long-neglected assortment of mature trees and shrubs, a stacked-stone retaining wall overgrown with ivy, and a narrow brick walkway behind the house that was visually unappealing. The new design utilized existing plantings where possible, adding trees, shrubs and perennials chosen to harmonize with the woodland setting. It also created two separate outdoor spaces along the walkway by breaking it up with an arbor lushly planted with hydrangeas and shade-tolerant perennials, and included a "magic garden" ringed by perennials with bell-like flowers for their young daughter underneath the shelter of a large oak tree.
